Greater Valley Artist: Jackie Fischer
“My artistic practice revolves around the creation of playful and whimsical sculptures infused with tongue-in-cheek dark humor. Through my works, I explore the concept of nostalgia and its evolution over time, often by playfully poking fun at our longings. This allows me to navigate complex and sometimes uncomfortable subjects with a lighthearted and ironic approach. By employing wit and satire, I aim to challenge conventional narratives.
Growing up in a low-income family on the border of two contrasting American communities has deeply influenced my exploration of the contradictions and complexities within our society. Through the transformation of idioms into sculpture, I play with their figurative and literal meanings, reflecting my personal, feminine, and cultural narrative. While my sculptures may initially appear light-hearted and playful, they often carry underlying social or cultural commentary.
Through the juxtaposition of seemingly contradictory elements, I create a space for contemplation and reflection. The interplay between the whimsical and the dark serves as a catalyst for engaging with deeper layers of meaning. It invites viewers to question societal norms, confront uncomfortable truths, and reconsider their own perspectives.”
